The Great Emperor of the North, also Xuantian Shangdi and the ‘Trolley of Demons’, is Daoism’s supreme northern warrior deity — depicted with flowing hair and black robe, standing upon tortoise and snake, who subdues demons, expels evil, upholds the righteous, and governs the water phase, so folk tradition also invokes him against flood and fire. This cupronickel high-relief renders his flowing-haired, gilt-bearded countenance in solemn, forceful majesty.

(FAQ) | Frequently Asked Questions
(Who is Zhenwu, the Great Emperor of the North?)
• Zhenwu, the Great Emperor of the North (Xuantian Shangdi), is Daoism’s supreme northern warrior deity, shown with flowing hair and black robe, standing on tortoise and snake, sword in hand to subdue demons. He governs the North and the water phase, and his functions include taming demons, expelling evil, guarding the home and granting safety; Wudang Mountain is his famous sanctuary. This pendant borrows his image as an auspicious emblem of protection.
(Why is Zhenwu invoked against flood and fire?)
• As a northern deity, Zhenwu corresponds to the Water phase in the Five Elements, so Daoist and folk tradition holds that he governs water and can temper and overawe disasters of flood and fire; devotees thus pray for safety from water and fire and a secure home. This is traditional symbolism and cultural meaning — the piece has been duly empowered (Jiachi), yet for real protection please still rely on proper fire and safety measures.
